The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) along with the following manufacturers announced a voluntary recall of certain pool and spa drain covers installed after December 19, 2008.  The drain covers pose a possible entrapment hazard to swimmers. More detailed information is available by clicking on the link below…

For your safety and peace of mind, please check your pool drain covers to see if yours has been included in the recall. If yours is one of the those recalled,  you should immediately contact the manufacturer to receive a replacement or retrofit, depending on the make and model.

Please note that drain covers should only be replaced by a pool or spa service professional who has possession of an approved replacement cover so that the old drain cover may be immediately replaced. 

In most cases if chlorine levels are in range, Algae will not get a grip on the pool. If chlorine slips down for some reason and mustard algae appears, the active ingredient in Yellow Out, Yellow Treat and Jack’s Magic Yellow Stuff is Sodium Bromide. Sodium Bromide creates a chlorine demand and therefore, chlorine should be added with the treatment and chlorine levels should be checked after treatment to ensure the proper amount of chlorine is in the pool.

Make sure the salt cell is clean as a regular part of the maintenance program. Read your equipment manual for the correct solution mix for cleaning.

Use a mineral sequestriant such as Jack’s Magic Magenta Stuff or Purple Stuff, as part of a regular maintenance routine to help prevent staining of the pool finish and the side benefit of helping to keep the cell clean.

Having a salt system doesn’t mean there’s nothing to do. Regular testing of the PH and Alkalinity, the Stabilizer and Calcium levels is important. Chlorine levels should be monitored for Chloramines (combined chlorine) and when present in a level over the range, should be removed by super chlorinating (shocking) the pool using the salt system.

For most effective removal of dirt, mustard algae dust etc.. turn off the skimmer when brushing and circulate through the main floor drain only. That way the suction is not split between the two and will thus be stronger at the floor where the dirt is.

Use a basket liner. Saves on the work of filter cleaning as smaller particles and pine needles etc.. will be caught in the skimmer rather than pass through the filter.

Run the pump a minimum of 8 hours a day in the summer. Consider switching to an energy efficient pump. The energy savings will make up for the cost of the equipment and then some.

To avoid a constant battle with Algae during the Florida summer, rather than adding liquid chlorine only once a week, add smaller amounts at least 3 times weekly. This will avoid the peaks and valleys that permit algae to get a grip.

Ensure that returns are properly set to keep water circulating especially in noted stagnant areas of the pool.
